The recent controversy surrounding NorthPort Batang Pier star John Amores has sparked a heated conversation about the behavior of professional basketball players in the Philippines.

Amores, who has a history of violent conduct on the court, was involved in a shooting incident in Lumban, Laguna, which brought his anger management issues to light once again. This situation has not only affected basketball circles but has also drawn attention from the Philippine Senate.

The Shooting Incident: A Shocking Turn of Events

John Amores’ involvement in an alleged shooting incident on September 25, 2023, shocked fans and officials alike. The CCTV footage of the event revealed that Amores had disembarked from a motorcycle driven by his brother before firing a gun at another man after a basketball game in Barangay Salac.

The argument that had occurred between the two on the basketball court escalated into violence. Fortunately, the victim survived, and Amores, along with his brother, surrendered to the police hours later. They are now out on bail, facing charges and inquest proceedings for attempted murder.

The shocking nature of this incident has caused many to question how a professional basketball player could reach such extremes. More importantly, it has led to discussions about whether players like Amores have unresolved anger management issues that need to be addressed. This brings us to the Philippine Senate’s deliberation on the issue, specifically led by Senator Christopher Lawrence “Bong” Go.

Senate’s Involvement and Senator Bong Go’s Call to Action

During Senate discussions about the Games and Amusement Board’s (GAB) proposed budget for 2025, Senator Bong Go expressed his concern over the issue of players’ behavior, particularly focusing on Amores. Go emphasized that the GAB should take steps to address the anger management issues of Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) players before these incidents spiral out of control.

In his speech during the subcommittee hearing, Go urged the GAB to review its policies and ensure that stricter measures are in place to prevent similar events in the future. He pointed out that Amores’ case was not an isolated incident, as the player had a history of violent conduct.

Go specifically referenced Amores’ notorious involvement in a fight during his time in the NCAA, where he punched four players from St. Benilde on November 8, 2022. That incident marked the end of Amores’ college basketball career.

"Study this carefully so it does not happen again. As for me, it needs to be investigated, but at your level, it is your mandate to check before you issue permits. Please look at this anger management issue because there are previous incidents. There were instances in the past, which means there is a tendency,” Senator Go emphasized.

The Importance of Prevention: Senator Go’s Recommendations

Senator Go did not stop at merely raising concerns; he also provided suggestions on how to prevent such situations in the future. He emphasized the importance of working closely with the PBA and other sports leagues to ensure that players undergo proper psychological evaluation and training in anger management. Go believes that prevention is the key to avoiding situations like Amores’ shooting incident.

“Kindly strengthen your rules or your policy. Prevention is essential here. We can prevent this, and we will not blame each other. Prevention is important. Work closely with the PBA, not only with the PBA,” Go urged.

The senator’s remarks highlight the importance of setting up proper preventive mechanisms within professional sports organizations like the PBA. He stressed that it is essential for GAB to be proactive in addressing these issues, ensuring that players are mentally and emotionally equipped to handle the pressures of the game.

GAB’s Response: A Collaborative Effort with the PBA

Following Senator Go’s statements, GAB chairperson Francisco Rivera assured the Senate that the board is taking the matter seriously. Rivera confirmed that GAB had already discussed the incident with PBA Commissioner Willie Marcial. However, Rivera also pointed out that it is the league's responsibility to investigate the case before GAB can take further action.

Rivera’s response underscores the collaborative nature of addressing such issues within professional basketball. While GAB has a role in overseeing professional sports in the Philippines, the responsibility of disciplining players falls largely on the respective leagues.

In this case, the PBA is expected to take the lead in investigating Amores’ conduct and ensuring that appropriate measures are taken to address any underlying issues, such as anger management.

Amores’ History of Violence: A Recurring Issue

John Amores is no stranger to controversy. Before the shooting incident, he was already known for his violent behavior on the basketball court. As mentioned earlier, his infamous altercation during an NCAA game in 2022 resulted in him being banned from the league. In that incident, Amores was seen punching several players from the opposing team, which ultimately led to the premature end of his college basketball career.

This pattern of behavior raises serious questions about whether Amores has adequately addressed his anger management issues since the NCAA incident. It also highlights a potential gap in how professional sports organizations monitor and rehabilitate players with known behavioral problems.

The fact that Amores continued to exhibit violent tendencies even after transitioning to the PBA suggests that more stringent measures are needed to ensure that players like him receive the help they need before their actions escalate into criminal behavior.

Looking Forward: What Needs to Change

The case of John Amores serves as a wake-up call for the entire Philippine basketball community. While it is clear that players like Amores have personal issues that need to be addressed, it is equally important for sports organizations to take responsibility for the well-being of their athletes.

As Senator Go pointed out, prevention is key. Implementing anger management programs, psychological evaluations, and stricter disciplinary measures can help prevent future incidents from occurring.

At the same time, GAB and the PBA must work closely together to ensure that players who exhibit troubling behavior are identified early and given the appropriate resources to manage their emotions. This will not only protect the reputation of the sport but also ensure the safety of all players, officials, and fans.
