Edin Terzic announced on Wednesday, June 13, that he has stepped down as the head coach of Borussia Dortmund despite leading the club to an unbelievable run to the 2023/24 UEFA Champions League final earlier this month.
Dortmund lost 2-0 in the final to Real Madrid in the Champions League Final on June 1, courtesy of goals from Vinicius Junior and Dani Carvajal. However, the team received plaudits from pundits and fans worldwide for overcoming all the odds to reach the final.
The club management confirmed that they had agreed to release Edin Terzic from his role after a “joint discussion” between both parties.
“Dear Borussians, even though it hurts me brutally right now, I would like to let you know that I will be leaving BVB as of today. It was a huge honor to lead this great club to a German Cup victory and, most recently, to a Champions League final ,” Edin Terzic said in a statement.
“After the game at Wembley, I asked for a meeting with the club’s senior management team, because after nine years at BVB - including six on the coaching staff and two and a half as head coach - I feel that the club’s new era should begin with a new man on the touchline.
“I wish Borussia Dortmund the very best, thank you and see you soon,” he added.
The 41-year-old began his coaching career at Dortmund’s academy from 2010 to 2013 before moving to Turkish club Besiktas as the assistant coach under Slaven Bilic. He followed Bilic to West Ham United in 2015 and soon returned to Dortmund in 2017 as the assistant coach.
He stepped up as the interim manager in December 2020 following the sacking of Lucien Favre, leading Dortmund to the German Cup (DFB Pokal) trophy. He was appointed the permanent manager in 2022 and led them to the runners-up finish in the 2022/23 Bundesliga last season.
In total, Terzic was in charge of 128 games for Dortmund, winning 75, losing 29, and drawing 24 games, with a win percentage of 58.59%.
