It is not counted until the Los Angeles Lakers at Sacramento Kings (Tue, Oct 6, 10:00 AM PH) is completed, as it was in the third quarter when this page was last updated. The next games are the Brooklyn, New Orleans and Denver at the Warriors, Lakers at Warriors, and at Charlotte on Wed, Oct 7 (PH).

Standout Performances

A lot of the best parts of preseason are the individual performances. Although a strong showing does not necessarily translate to a regular season breakout, it does indicate who's been given more playing time. The top scorers in the first seven games in the NBA.com Top 100 were Jaylen Brown (22 points for Philadelphia), Rui Hachimura (21 for the Clippers), Corey Kispert (19 for Atlanta) and Lauri Markkanen (17 for Utah). Toronto's Tyreke Key and RJ Barrett were all listed as 15-0 in a 24-point defeat to Miami.

Rookies

The Rookie debuts are the most viewed events of the pre-season. If you read a recap you should look at things that relate to shooting: shooting efficiency, defensive positioning, contact handling. The difference between a rookie shooting 25 on 25 and a rookie shooting 18 on 10 is another matter.

Returning stars

The preseason for the more experienced players is concerned with finding the rhythm. Pay attention to the appearance of a star in the first few minutes and also for the minutes themselves. If it goes past the intended limit, it is often a positive sign and an early out should lead to a thorough investigation of the injury report.

Surprise performers

Each preseason brings a few surprises such as a second-year player who suddenly seems to be confident or perhaps a camp invitee who is selected to the team, or perhaps a veteran role player who learns a new skill. These are the ones who tend to be the best options for fantasy players and prop betters when it's time to start the season.

1. Two games were played close, within three points of each other: The Warriors lost to the Clippers in Honolulu on Monday, Oct. 5 at 7:00 AM PH, 104-101, led by Clippers' Rui Hachimura who scored 21 points. The Pistons edged the Suns 109-107 in Detroit (Tue, Oct 6, 7:00 AM PH). Games that are close are the most ideal to revisit for rotations near the end of the game.
2. There were three one-sided games: The Heat beat the Raptors 129-105 in Quebec City (Sun, Oct 4, 7:00 AM PH), the 76ers beat the Knicks 120-97 in Philadelphia (Tue, Oct 6, 7:00 AM PH), and the Timberwolves beat the Bucks 116-97 in Milwaukee (Tue, Oct 6, 8:00 AM PH). Margins of that size are more likely to reflect the length of the starters' playing time so use the minutes as a guide rather than more as an indicator of the margin.
3. The Grizzlies and Hawks scored a total of 255 points: The first seven games were the most points scored with Memphis downing Atlanta 132-123 on Tuesday, Oct. 6, at 7:00 AM PH, with Corey Kispert's 19 points topping the scoring for Atlanta. If you're looking to see how loose the preseason defenses can be, then this is a good game to watch.
4. No listed scoring leader scored over 22 points: The NBA.com leaders were in the range of 14 to 22, while Toronto's two leaders, RJ Barrett, and Tyreke Key, were tied at 15 against Miami. That is a preseason when minutes are available and stars aren't fatigued.

How to Read an NBA Preseason Score

The final score is the first score. These queries transform a number into a valuable piece of information.

• Who was in play and how long? A team that doesn't play with its best 20 players isn't as formidable as a team with its top 20 players.
• How did the starting players do? It's better to know how many of these they had in limited time than the final score.
• Was it a blowout against reserves? The bench players for the second 20 minutes of the game make their mark on the game.
• Did the Coach do something different? A loss can be significant when the game is an experimental game of lineups and defensive styles.
• Were there injuries? When an important player gets injured, the scoreboard can get lost in the mix.

What the Preseason Scores Mean for Bettors

Totalize the trends: overs or unders?

Preseason totals can be dynamic as rotations are flowing and defenses are not as crisp.
