Novak Djokovic is one of tennis best players of all time and once again embroiled in controversy at Wimbledon. During his fourth-round encounter against young Danish star Holger Rune, the crowd's actions made Djokovic feel humiliated. The screams of "Ruuuuuuu-ne" booming across Centre Court were more than just cheers for Rune; to Djokovic, they were a thinly veiled reason to hate him. This incident adds another chapter to Tennis Wimbledon Novak Djokovic turbulent relationship with the Wimbledon audience.

A Tense Atmosphere on Centre Court

The match itself was a showcase of Djokovic's dominance on grass. He secured a convincing victory with a scoreline of 6-3, 6-4, 6-2, advancing to the quarter-finals as he continues his quest for a record-equalling eighth Wimbledon men's title. However, it wasn't the score that grabbed headlines but rather the interaction between Djokovic and the crowd.

Hundreds of fans greeted each Rune winner with elongated cries of "Ruuuuuuu-ne" and each Djokovic error with similar enthusiasm. To the untrained ear, it might have sounded like boos, and Djokovic certainly perceived it that way. During the on-court interview with Rishi Persad, Djokovic made his feelings clear. When asked about the crowd's support for Rune, he responded, "I know they were cheering for Rune but that’s an excuse to also boo. I have been on the tour for more than 20 years. I know all the tricks."

A History of Tension in Tennis Wimbledon Novak Djokovic

Djokovic's relationship with the Wimbledon crowd has never been straightforward. Despite his impressive record at the tournament—nine finals and seven titles—he has often found himself on the receiving end of mixed reactions. After his epic victory over Roger Federer in the 2019 final, his former coach Boris Becker commented on how Djokovic deserved more respect from the crowd, who had largely supported Federer.

Two years later, during a semi-final match against Britain's Cameron Norrie, Djokovic faced boos again after blowing a kiss to the crowd post-victory. These instances highlight a pattern of tension between Djokovic and the Wimbledon audience, which seemed to resurface during his match against Rune.

The Chant Debate

Holger Rune, the 21-year-old rising star, had his own perspective on the crowd's chants. "If you don't know what was happening, probably it sounded like 'boo'. But if we all know what happened, it was my name," Rune explained. "If he didn't remember, it could probably sound different for him. I don't think it played a massive part in the match."

Rune's comments suggest that the chants were simply supportive cheers elongated in a way that could be misinterpreted. However, for Djokovic, the distinction wasn't clear, and the perceived disrespect was palpable.

Not an Isolated Incident

It's not uncommon for sports stars to have their names chanted with stretched-out vowels. Earlier in the Wimbledon fortnight, Sue Barker received cries of "Suuuuuuuuue" as she interviewed Andy Murray during his emotional farewell. Similarly, when cricketer Joe Root was introduced to the Wimbledon crowd, he was met with the familiar "Rooooooooot" chant that greets his boundaries for England. These instances show that elongated chants are a part of sports culture, but for Djokovic, the context and his history with the crowd made it feel like something more personal.

Djokovic's Response

Throughout the match, Djokovic maintained his composure, showcasing the mental fortitude that has made him a champion. After securing the second set, he did stare at a pocket of Rune supporters, and he glanced towards the chanting fans while standing by the microphone for his on-court interview. His message to the crowd was clear: "I played in much more hostile environments, trust me - you guys can't touch me. To all the fans that have had respect and stayed here tonight, I thank you from the bottom of my heart and I appreciate it."

Despite the apparent animosity, Djokovic attempted to end on a lighter note. Signing off his interview, he said, "To all those people that have chosen to disrespect the player (in this case me)... have a goooooooood night." This mix of defiance and humor encapsulates Djokovic's approach to dealing with crowd hostility.

Standing by His Words

In a later interview with BBC Sport, Djokovic stood firm on his views. "When I feel a crowd is stepping over the line, I react," he stated. "I don’t regret my words or actions on the court." This unwavering stance highlights Djokovic's belief in standing up against perceived disrespect, regardless of the consequences.

As Djokovic prepares to face Australian ninth seed Alex de Minaur in the quarter-finals, the incident with the crowd will undoubtedly linger in the minds of fans and commentators alike. Djokovic's journey at Wimbledon this year is about more than just winning another title; it's also about navigating the complex dynamics of player and crowd interactions.
