The Minnesota Timberwolves have significantly bolstered their roster ahead of the 2024/25 NBA season by signing veteran guard Chasson Randle to an Exhibit 10 contract. This move is a strategic addition as the team looks to build on its recent success and make a deeper run in the NBA playoffs.

The Signing of Chasson Randle

NBA insider Michael Sotto broke the news on social networking platform X (formerly known as Twitter), stating, “The Minnesota Timberwolves have agreed to an Exhibit 10 deal with guard Chasson Randle. Randle spent last season with AEK Athens and has four years of NBA experience combined with the Philadelphia 76ers, New York Knicks, Washington Wizards, and Orlando Magic.”

Randle’s Exhibit 10 contract provides him with an opportunity to join Minnesota’s preseason camp, where he will compete for a spot on the regular-season roster. An Exhibit 10 contract is a one-year, minimum salary deal that is non-guaranteed but includes an incentive bonus if the player is waived and then joins the team’s G League affiliate.

In this case, Randle would play for the Iowa Wolves, the Timberwolves’ G League team. The Iowa Wolves confirmed they have acquired the returning player rights to Chasson Randle from the OKC Blue in exchange for the returning player rights to Javonte Cooke.

Chasson Randle’s NBA and Overseas Experience

Chasson Randle brings a wealth of experience and a versatile skill set to the Timberwolves. The 31-year-old was last seen in the NBA during the 2020/21 season with the Orlando Magic, where he averaged 6.5 points, 2.0 rebounds, and 1.8 assists per game while shooting 38.8 percent from the field and 33.8 percent from three-point range across 41 regular-season games, including five starts.

His journey to the NBA was not straightforward; after going undrafted in the 2015 NBA Draft, Randle began his professional career overseas with CEZ Nymburk in the Czech Republic’s National Basketball League (NBL).

Randle made his NBA debut during the 2016/17 season with the New York Knicks and Philadelphia 76ers, showcasing his ability to adapt quickly to the league’s pace and competition. He has also had stints with the Golden State Warriors, Washington Wizards, and Orlando Magic, contributing his scoring, playmaking, and defensive skills. Randle’s career averages of 5.7 points, 1.4 rebounds, and 1.8 assists per game, while shooting 40.1 percent from the field and 36.1 percent from three-point range, highlight his ability to be an efficient role player.

What Randle Brings to the Timberwolves

Randle’s addition is seen as a low-risk, high-reward move for the Timberwolves. His experience, combined with his proficiency as a scorer and playmaker, will add depth to Minnesota’s backcourt. Randle’s ability to shoot from beyond the arc and handle the ball under pressure will be valuable assets, particularly in clutch situations or when the Timberwolves face injuries or need to rest their key guards. Moreover, his maturity and professionalism can set a good example for younger players on the team.

The Timberwolves had a successful 2023/24 NBA campaign, finishing third in the Western Conference standings with a 56-26 win-loss record. They made it to the Western Conference Finals, only to fall to the Dallas Mavericks in a hard-fought best-of-seven series. Adding a veteran presence like Randle can help the team navigate the challenges of a long season and the grind of the playoffs.

Competition for Roster Spots

With Randle’s signing, Minnesota now has 18 players heading into training camp, including those on two-way contracts. This depth will foster a competitive environment, pushing each player to perform at their best. For Randle, the challenge will be to stand out among a crowded backcourt that includes established guards like Anthony Edwards, Mike Conley, and Jordan McLaughlin.

The Exhibit 10 contract allows Randle to compete for a regular-season spot, and if he doesn’t make the final roster, he has the option to join the Iowa Wolves and receive a financial bonus. This structure provides Randle with a clear path to showcase his talents and potentially earn a guaranteed NBA contract down the line.

Randle’s Journey: From Overseas to the NBA and Back

Chasson Randle’s professional journey is a testament to his resilience and dedication to the game. After his last NBA stint with the Magic, Randle continued to hone his skills overseas, most recently with AEK Athens in Greece. Playing in different leagues around the world, Randle has gained a unique perspective on the game, adapting to various styles of play and competition levels.

This global experience has made Randle a more well-rounded player, capable of bringing diverse skills and insights to the Timberwolves. His time in Europe, where the game is often more tactical and team-oriented, has refined his understanding of basketball, making him a valuable addition to any NBA roster.

The Timberwolves’ Outlook for the 2024/25 Season

With the upcoming NBA season on the horizon, the Timberwolves are gearing up for what they hope will be a breakout year. The team’s front office has been active in the offseason, not only by adding veterans like Randle but also by focusing on building a roster that can compete with the best teams in the league. The signing of Randle is part of a broader strategy to deepen the team’s talent pool and provide head coach Chris Finch with more options as he navigates the season.

The Timberwolves’ core, led by rising star Anthony Edwards, seasoned center Rudy Gobert, and the experienced Karl-Anthony Towns, will be looking to make a significant impact. The addition of veterans like Randle can provide much-needed depth and leadership, helping to guide the younger players through the rigors of an 82-game season and the intensity of playoff basketball.
