chicago bulls signs with talen horton tucker

The Chicago Bulls have made a notable move to bolster their roster by adding seasoned experience to their backcourt, signing Talen Horton-Tucker ahead of the 2024/25 National Basketball Association (NBA) season. This acquisition marks a significant step for the Bulls as they aim to climb the ranks in the Eastern Conference and make a strong push for the playoffs.

Horton-Tucker’s Return Home

NBA insider and The Athletic’s Shams Charania broke the news on social networking platform X (formerly known as Twitter), stating, “Free agent guard Talen Horton-Tucker has agreed to a partially guaranteed deal with the Chicago Bulls. The Chicago native returns home and will have an opportunity to make the Bulls roster after averaging 10.5 points over the last two seasons in Utah.” This move not only brings Horton-Tucker back to his hometown but also presents him with a fresh opportunity to prove his worth and contribute significantly to a team in need of depth and versatility.

A Solid Season with the Utah Jazz

Horton-Tucker is coming off a respectable 2023/24 NBA season with the Utah Jazz, where he averaged 10.1 points, 2.4 rebounds, and 3.5 assists per game. His shooting percentages were decent, with 36.9 percent from the field and 33 percent from three-point range over 51 appearances. Despite these solid numbers, the Jazz decided not to retain him, making him a free agent available to sign with any team in the NBA. The Bulls, recognizing his potential, quickly acted to bring him aboard as they seek to rebuild their backcourt and add more scoring options.

Early Career and Championship Experience

Selected as the 46th overall pick in the 2019 NBA Draft by the Orlando Magic, Horton-Tucker was immediately traded to the Los Angeles Lakers in exchange for a 2020 second-round draft pick and cash considerations. During his tenure with the Lakers, he played a supporting role over three seasons, contributing to the team’s 2020 NBA championship run. Although his on-court involvement during the playoffs was limited—appearing in just two games—his championship experience is invaluable and adds a winning pedigree to the Bulls’ roster.

In August 2022, Horton-Tucker was traded to the Utah Jazz along with Stanley Johnson in exchange for Patrick Beverley. His first season with the Jazz was his most productive as a professional, where he posted career highs with 10.7 points, 3.8 assists, and 3.2 rebounds per game. His field goal shooting percentage also saw improvement, hitting 41.9 percent, though his three-point shooting remained a work in progress at 28.6 percent.

Overall, Horton-Tucker has accumulated career averages of 9.8 points, 2.8 rebounds, and 3.1 assists per game, shooting 42.3 percent from the field and 29.3 percent from beyond the arc in 247 regular season games. He has made six playoff appearances throughout his career, providing him with the kind of experience that the Bulls hope will translate into meaningful contributions off the bench. At just 24 years old, Horton-Tucker still has plenty of room to grow, and the Bulls are betting on his upside to make a difference in their lineup.

Fit with the Chicago Bulls

Horton-Tucker joins a promising roster featuring star players like Zach LaVine, Nikola Vucevic, and Coby White, along with rising talent Josh Giddey. This group of players is determined to build on the Bulls’ performance from the 2023/24 NBA season, where they finished ninth in the Eastern Conference standings with a 39-43 win-loss record. Despite their efforts, the Bulls fell short of making the playoffs, losing to the Miami Heat in the play-in tournament and missing out on the postseason for the second consecutive year.

With Horton-Tucker’s addition, the Bulls are not just looking for depth but also seeking a versatile player who can handle the ball, score in a variety of ways, and provide energy on both ends of the floor. His defensive abilities, combined with his knack for creating his own shot, make him an intriguing piece in the Bulls’ puzzle as they aim to re-establish themselves as playoff contenders.

The upcoming season is crucial for the Bulls, who are looking to end their playoff drought and re-establish themselves as one of the top teams in the Eastern Conference. Horton-Tucker’s signing is a part of their broader strategy to add young, dynamic talent that complements their core group of players. His ability to play multiple positions, coupled with his championship experience, could be the spark the Bulls need to turn their fortunes around.
