The Creamline Cool Smashers continued their impressive run in the ongoing Premier Volleyball League (PVL) Invitational Conference, overcoming fatigue and a resilient Japanese team, Kurashiki Ablaze. In a thrilling match held on Sunday, September 8, at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City, Creamline secured a hard-fought victory with set scores of 25-22, 25-22, 26-28, 25-21. This win marked a significant moment for the Cool Smashers as they avenged their loss in last year’s Invitational Conference final against the same team.

A Battle of Resilience and Determination

The Cool Smashers showcased their resilience by bouncing back from a tough third-set loss, demonstrating the kind of mental fortitude and tactical discipline that fans have come to expect from the team. The rematch was a display of sheer determination, as both teams pushed their limits in a bid to gain the upper hand. Creamline's ability to stay composed under pressure was key to their success, allowing them to execute their game plan effectively.

Star American import Erica Staunton was once again at the forefront of Creamline’s attack, leading her team with a stellar 21-point performance, including 18 attacks. Her powerful spikes and consistent scoring were crucial in keeping the pressure on Kurashiki’s defense. Staunton’s remarkable form throughout the tournament has been a major factor in Creamline’s success, and her contribution in this game was no different.

Alongside Staunton, the Reinforced Conference’s Most Valuable Player (MVP), Bernadeth Pons, delivered an all-around performance with 13 points, 13 excellent digs, and 21 receptions. Pons’ ability to balance her offensive and defensive responsibilities played a pivotal role in neutralizing Kurashiki’s fast-paced style of play.

Kyle Negrito orchestrated the team’s offense with precision, tallying 19 excellent sets. Her quick decision-making and strategic distribution of the ball kept Kurashiki’s blockers guessing, allowing Creamline’s attackers to find gaps in the opposition’s defense. Veteran player Michele Gumabao also played a significant role, contributing 19 points, including 17 attacks and two kill blocks. Gumabao’s standout performance earned her the Player of the Game accolade, and her leadership on the court was evident as she continually rallied her teammates during crucial moments.

Tactical Discipline and Teamwork

Reflecting on the match, Gumabao emphasized the importance of staying disciplined against a team like Kurashiki. “We had to stay disciplined. Kurashiki has a very good system - they thrive on fast play. They are not the tallest team, but they work incredibly hard on defense, both at the net and on the floor. That’s something we focused on during the game,” Gumabao stated after the game. Her comments highlighted Creamline’s strategic approach to the match, focusing on countering Kurashiki’s speed and defensive prowess.

Staunton echoed Gumabao’s sentiments, praising the team’s work ethic and competitive spirit. “I’m very proud, but honestly, this is just such a hardworking team, and it’s full of competitors. There are quick turnarounds between games, but like I said, everybody’s a competitor, so I’m pretty ready for it,” Staunton added. Her words reflect the determination and unity within the team, qualities that have been instrumental in their journey through the tournament.

Aiming for Back-to-Back Finals Appearances

With this victory, Creamline is now just one win away from securing their spot in the Invitational Conference final for the second consecutive year. The Cool Smashers currently hold a 2-0 win-loss record in the standings, positioning them strongly for another shot at the title. They will face the Cignal HD Spikers on Monday, September 9, at the Mall of Asia Arena, where a win will confirm their place in the final.

Creamline’s head coach, Sherwin Meneses, expressed confidence in his team’s ability to continue their winning form. “We’re taking it one game at a time. The focus is on recovery and preparation. Every match is an opportunity to improve, and we’re aiming to bring our best performance each time we step on the court,” Meneses said. His approach underscores the team’s commitment to continuous improvement and the high standards they have set for themselves.

Kurashiki Ablaze Faces a Setback

For Kurashiki Ablaze, the loss against Creamline was their first defeat in the PVL since winning the Invitational Conference last year, ending their impressive 8-0 winning streak. Despite the setback, the Japanese club remains a formidable force in the tournament, known for their quick plays and tenacious defense. Kurashiki will have a two-day break to regroup and strategize before their next match against the Cignal HD Spikers on Wednesday, September 11, at the PhilSports Arena.

Kurashiki’s head coach acknowledged the challenge posed by Creamline’s disciplined play and vowed to make the necessary adjustments. “Creamline played a great game. We need to refocus and work on the areas where we fell short. It’s about learning from this and coming back stronger,” he stated. The Ablaze will be keen to bounce back and demonstrate the resilience that has characterized their performances in the league.

The PVL Invitational Conference continues to heat up as teams battle for supremacy and a place in the final. With Creamline’s disciplined approach and Kurashiki’s relentless spirit, fans are in for an exciting conclusion to the tournament. Keep your eyes on the games and support your favorite teams as they vie for the championship.
