The Sacramento Kings pulled off a significant move by acquiring NBA veteran DeMar DeRozan in a three-year, $74 million deal through a complex three-team trade involving the Chicago Bulls and San Antonio Spurs. This trade saw Harrison Barnes heading to the San Antonio Spurs, while the Bulls received guard Chris Duarte, two second-round picks, and cash from Sacramento, as well as RaiQuan Gray, who was subsequently waived by San Antonio.
DeMar DeRozan was a highly sought-after free agent this offseason, with notable interest from teams like the Philadelphia 76ers, Los Angeles Lakers, Los Angeles Clippers, and Miami Heat. In the latest episode of “Podcast P with Paul George,” the 35-year-old small forward discussed his reasons for choosing the Sacramento Kings over other teams.
“One, and this is funny, I had to wait for what you were going to do. So I’m waiting for what you were going to do, first of all. I had a hell of a time in Chicago. I had some hell of a teammates in Chicago. Great city, great place. I think I was just looking for an opportunity just to win at a high level, wherever that was going to be. I think coming out of last season, that was my view and my approach on this upcoming season,” DeRozan stated.
“So, when the season ended, I just took a seat back. Everybody knew I’m in a place where I just want to win, so from there I just let the cards play out in a way to where, ‘All right, let me see what landscape or what is going to win, and where I can be a part of that and help with that.”
The Kings presented an enticing opportunity that aligned with DeRozan’s goal of competing at a high level. Sacramento has been building a competitive squad, featuring All-Star guard De’Aaron Fox, All-Star center Domantas Sabonis, and rising star Keegan Murray. These players form the backbone of a team looking to make a serious push in the Western Conference.
DeRozan emphasized that the Kings’ genuine interest played a significant role in his decision. He appreciated the team’s commitment and the culture of winning they were building, famously represented by the Kings' "beam lighting" tradition that follows each win.
“Sac came about and they were showing interest. Like, real interest. So when I sat back and looked at it and analyzed the team: great players, great coach. I just remember the last couple of years always seeing them lighting this damn beam and winning. They for sure have a movement. And that’s one thing you always definitely want to be a part of is a contagious culture of an organization that wants to win. When I looked at all that, it just felt like it fit. It was a big key piece that I can bring from a leadership standpoint and definitely skills standpoint that can push us over the edge. It became more and more appealing as I weighed it."
“I took a while to sign because I wanted to make sure the next decision I made gave me the best opportunity to win. I’m definitely looking forward to it,” DeRozan concluded.

DeRozan’s decision to join Sacramento comes off the back of a productive stint with the Chicago Bulls, where he recently completed a three-year, $81.9 million contract. Despite being one of the older players in the league, DeRozan’s performance has not diminished. Last season, he averaged 24.0 points, 4.3 rebounds, and 5.3 assists per game, shooting an impressive 48 percent from the field. His contributions in clutch moments were particularly noteworthy, as he finished second only to Golden State Warriors star Stephen Curry in the NBA’s Clutch Player of the Year voting.
Selected as the ninth overall pick by the Toronto Raptors in the 2009 NBA Draft, DeRozan has carved out an impressive career across multiple franchises. In addition to his time with the Raptors and Bulls, he spent several years with the San Antonio Spurs, where he continued to hone his game. Over his career, DeRozan has appeared in 1,110 NBA games, averaging 21.2 points, 4.4 rebounds, and 4.1 assists per game. He is widely regarded as one of the league’s most consistent and resilient players.
At 35, DeRozan brings not just his on-court skills but also a wealth of experience and leadership to the Kings. His ability to perform under pressure, coupled with his veteran presence, is expected to be a valuable addition to a young Sacramento squad looking to make a deep playoff run.
Sacramento’s recent moves indicate a clear strategy: build around a core of young, talented players while adding experienced veterans like DeRozan who can contribute immediately. The acquisition of DeRozan is a statement that the Kings are serious about contending in the tough Western Conference. His ability to score from mid-range, facilitate offense, and provide leadership on and off the court aligns well with Sacramento’s needs.
DeRozan’s arrival is expected to bolster the Kings’ playoff ambitions. With Fox and Sabonis already established as All-Star level players, DeRozan’s presence adds another dimension to the Kings' offense, making them a more formidable opponent. His veteran savvy is also anticipated to be a guiding force for young players like Keegan Murray, who can learn from DeRozan’s experience and work ethic.
For DeRozan, the decision to join the Kings is not just about fit, but about seizing an opportunity to win at a high level. The Kings’ recent success and the potential to be a part of an emerging powerhouse in the NBA resonated with him. As he looks ahead to the upcoming season, DeRozan is focused on contributing to Sacramento's rise and hopes to be a key piece in what could be a historic run for the franchise.
The Kings, who have not seen significant postseason success since their peak in the early 2000s, are eager to turn the page and make a new chapter with DeRozan on board. For fans, the excitement is palpable as they anticipate what this revamped roster can achieve.
