donovan mitchell predicts nba finals teams

All-Star guard Donovan Mitchell committed his future to the Cleveland Cavaliers by signing a three-year, $150.3 million maximum contract extension. This deal includes a player option for the 2027/28 season, underscores Mitchell's dedication to bringing an NBA championship to Cleveland. As the 2024/25 season approaches, the 27-year-old superstar is leaving no stone unturned in his quest to lead the Cavaliers to the Finals.

Mitchell has already been vocal about which teams he believes will be the toughest competitors in the Western Conference. In a recent appearance on the Million Dollaz Worth of Game podcast, Mitchell shared his predictions for the upcoming NBA season. He named the Oklahoma City Thunder and the Minnesota Timberwolves as the two teams he expects to reach the NBA Finals, a bold statement considering the powerhouses typically dominating the West.

“I would say it’s probably going to be the Minnesota Timberwolves or Oklahoma City Thunder,” Mitchell stated. “I think Minnesota, they some dogs. I think they figured it out too about themselves. They made some trades and made some different acquisitions and all that, but they figured it out. Oklahoma City Thunder adding Alex Caruso, I don’t think people really understand what that does for that lineup. You have already got Cason Wallace over there, you have got Lu Dort, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander’s not a bad defender himself. You add Alex Caruso to that lineup.”

Mitchell’s mention of the Oklahoma City Thunder as a potential Finals contender is not without merit. The Thunder have quietly assembled a roster with a mix of young talent and experienced veterans, making them a formidable force in the West. The offseason acquisition of Alex Caruso from the Chicago Bulls, in exchange for Josh Giddey, was a strategic move that could significantly bolster their defense. Caruso, a two-time All-Defensive Team guard, brings an elite level of perimeter defense and a winning mentality, having been a key part of the Los Angeles Lakers’ 2020 championship run.

Oklahoma City already had a solid defensive core with players like Lu Dort and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, both known for their ability to lock down opponents. The addition of Caruso further enhances this aspect of their game, potentially making them one of the toughest teams to score against in the league. Furthermore, the continued development of young stars like Chet Holmgren, who is expected to make his NBA debut after missing his rookie season due to injury, could push the Thunder into serious contention.

The Minnesota Timberwolves, another team highlighted by Mitchell, have been steadily improving over the past few seasons. With a roster featuring All-Star big man Karl-Anthony Towns and the dynamic guard Anthony Edwards, the Timberwolves have the firepower to challenge any team in the league. Last season, they made a strong push in the playoffs, showing that they are no longer the perennial underdogs of the Western Conference.

Mitchell’s comment about the Timberwolves having “figured it out” likely refers to their improved chemistry and strategic roster moves. Minnesota’s front office has been active, making key trades and signings to strengthen their lineup. Their defense, anchored by Rudy Gobert, a three-time Defensive Player of the Year, and the versatility of Jaden McDaniels, has become one of their biggest assets. If they can continue to build on last season’s success, the Timberwolves could indeed make a deep playoff run.

While Mitchell is focused on his potential opponents in the Finals, he is equally committed to ensuring the Cleveland Cavaliers are prepared for their own title run. The Cavaliers have had a busy offseason, securing the futures of their core players, including big men Evan Mobley and Jarrett Allen, alongside Mitchell. With Darius Garland running the point, Cleveland boasts a top-four lineup that can compete with the best in the league.

The Cavaliers made significant strides last season, winning a playoff series for the first time since 2018 by defeating the Orlando Magic in the first round. However, their journey was cut short by the Boston Celtics, who eventually went on to win the championship. Despite their progress, the Cavaliers made a bold move by firing head coach J.B. Bickerstaff in the offseason, replacing him with Kenny Atkinson, a coach known for his player development skills and strategic acumen.

Atkinson’s arrival could be a game-changer for the Cavaliers. His experience in developing young talent during his time with the Brooklyn Nets could be crucial for a team like Cleveland, which is built around a mix of young stars and seasoned veterans. The team’s success will largely depend on how quickly Atkinson can implement his system and get the best out of his players.

2024/25 NBA Season Predictions

As the 2024/25 NBA season approaches, all eyes will be on Donovan Mitchell and the Cleveland Cavaliers. Mitchell’s predictions for the Finals might seem unconventional to some, but they reflect his understanding of the evolving landscape of the NBA. The Oklahoma City Thunder and Minnesota Timberwolves are teams on the rise, and their potential to disrupt the established order in the Western Conference should not be underestimated.

For the Cavaliers, the upcoming season is about proving that they belong among the league’s elite. With Mitchell leading the charge, supported by a strong core and a new coaching staff, Cleveland has all the ingredients to make a deep playoff run. Whether Mitchell’s prediction of facing the Thunder or Timberwolves in the Finals comes true remains to be seen, but one thing is certain: the 2024/25 NBA season promises to be one of the most exciting in recent memory.
