The field is officially set. It has been confirmed that 48 qualified teams will now compete at a FIFA world cup after an extensive qualifying process that took more than two and a half years and hundreds of matches across six confederations.
Iraq's 2-1 win over Bolivia in the intercontinental playoff final secured the final vacancy, and completed the 48 nation lineup of the 2026 FIFA world cup being hosted by Canada, Mexico, and the United States. Now that the result is officially in, it is officially set in stone as to what will be a historic summer, on the biggest stage of all in football.
The 2026 FIFA world cup will be the first-time tournament and will include 48 teams, an increase compared to 32 teams that played in the previous tournaments. This will be a total of 104 matches instead of 64 matches and will be played in 16 different venues in the three different host nations.
The 39-day tournament was the longest World Cup ever, and still had three group-stage games per team. To the fans in the Philippines and the rest of Asia that translates to more football, more upsets and a lot more reasons to keep late hours.
This growth also has landmark importance: the 2026 version will become the first FIFA world cup in which all six confederations will have at least one guaranteed berth and the first since 2010 that all confederations will have a team in the finals.

The 48 Qualified Teams have been attracted into 12 groups of four. This is the entire breakdown of group stages:
Argentina will seek to defend the trophy that legendary captain Lionel Messi won at Qatar 2022, and Cape Verde, Curaçao, Jordan, and Uzbekistan will all make their debut at the world cup.
Europe has the most significant number of participants to attend a world cup. The 16 qualifiers in Europe include England, France, Croatia, Norway, Portugal, Germany, Netherlands, Switzerland, Scotland, Spain, Austria, Belgium, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Sweden, Türkiye, and Czechia.
Italy notably missed out as it lost on penalties in the European playoff final to Bosnia and Herzegovina, becoming the first former world cup champion to miss three consecutive world cups. Sweden took a step forward by becoming the first European country to qualify after having only made it to the playoffs via the UEFA Nations League.
The six places of South America were occupied by Brazil, Argentina, Colombia, Uruguay, Ecuador, and Paraguay. Colombia and Panama made a return after missing out in 2022.
The nine eligible countries in Africa are Morocco, Senegal, Egypt, Ivory Coast, Ghana, Tunisia, South Africa, Algeria and Cape Verde. South Africa had a successful qualifying campaign since 2002. It is also the first time when eight Arab countries qualified to the same world cup, which is an increase of four in the previous world cups of 2018 and 2022.
Japan, South Korea, Iran, Saudi Arabia, Australia, Jordan, Uzbekistan and Qatar represent Asia. The first country to qualify was Japan which happened in March 2025. Jordan and Uzbekistan became the first in their history to qualify.
Mexico, Canada and the United States were automatic host nations. The other three were Panama, Haiti and Curaacao. Curaacao was the smallest country in the history of the world to ever compete in a FIFA world cup. It will be the first instance that two Caribbean countries (Curaacao and Haiti) will play the world cup together.
The Oceania berth was taken over by New Zealand. The team that was ranked the highest but failed to qualify was Italy (ranked 12th) whereas the lowest-ranked team to qualify was New Zealand (ranked 85th).
In the intercontinental playoff finals in Mexico, DR Congo triumphed over Jamaica 1-0 in the first final, and Iraq over Bolivia 2-1 in the second - earning the two remaining slots. The qualification of Iraq was their first appearance in the world cup since 1986.
The 48 teams are divided into 12 groups of four and the best two teams out of four in each group and the eight best third-placed teams will go to a new round of 32. This format gives additional countries a fighting opportunity - including first-timers - making this the most competitive and unpredictable World Cup ever.
The tournament will last between June 11 and July 19 with 104 matches to be played in the three host countries. The first match is a replay of the world cup opening match in 2010 that saw Mexico play South Africa on June 11, 2014, in Mexico City.
Iraq 40 years return: One of the most heart-wrenching qualification tales of the cycle - 21 matches over 28 months to get there.
