‘It’s About Time’ - Harlem Globetrotters stars Wham Middleton and Moose Weekes laud the introduction of the four-point shot by the PBA

The Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) recently made headlines by introducing a significant change for its 49th season: the addition of the four-point shot. This new feature will be implemented when the new season begins on August 18, aiming to make the game more thrilling and dynamic for fans.

A Revolutionary Change in the PBA

PBA Commissioner Willie Marcial confirmed on Monday, July 22, that the board of governors agreed to add the four-point shot starting with the Governor’s Cup. This shot will be awarded for successful attempts beyond the 27-foot arc from the basket. The idea of a four-point shot is not entirely new to the PBA audience, as it was first tested during the last PBA All-Star Game held in Bacolod. The concept received an overwhelmingly positive response from fans, particularly when Robert Bolick made history by completing a five-point play for Team Mark.

Harlem Globetrotters Praise the Innovation

As the PBA gears up for this exciting change, the renowned American exhibition basketball team, the Harlem Globetrotters, are also preparing for their Asia tour, which includes a stop in Manila, Philippines. Harlem’s superstar duo, Wham Middleton and Moose Weekes, have publicly praised the PBA's decision to introduce the four-point shot.

Moose Weekes highlighted the fact that the four-point shot is already a feature in the Big League, the US 3x3 professional league, and reminded everyone that it was the Harlem Globetrotters who first introduced this concept. "All I can say is it’s about time. The Harlem Globetrotters were the first to bring up the four-point circle for a four-point shot. Now we are playing with a four-point line. And now I’m going to pass the microphone to a four-point specialist," Weekes stated during a press conference.

Wham Middleton’s Perspective

Wham Middleton, known for his exceptional shooting skills, revealed his impressive stats, boasting a 56 percent shooting average from the four-point line in the past. He compared this to NBA star Stephen Curry's three-point shooting percentage, which is about 36 percent. "That was pretty good. If you think of an NBA club, Stephen Curry shoots the three-ball at about 36 percent. Just to give you, you know. But you know we introduced that four-point line in 2010, so we have been doing this for over a decade. So just to see a professional league to actually add it is amazing. Just shows how far we have come to," Middleton added.

The Harlem Globetrotters' Legacy

The Harlem Globetrotters are widely recognized as one of the most popular basketball attractions worldwide. Their history includes notable alumni who later became stars and legends in the National Basketball Association (NBA), such as Wilt Chamberlain, Chuck Cooper, Connie Hawkins, and Nat Clifton. Their unique blend of athleticism, theater, and comedy has captivated audiences for decades, making them a household name in basketball entertainment.

The Globetrotters’ Asia Tour is set to kick off in Manila on November 12 at the Smart Araneta Coliseum. Following their performance in the Philippines, they will travel to Malaysia, Indonesia, and conclude their tour in Singapore.

The Impact of the Four-Point Shot on the PBA

The PBA's decision to implement the four-point shot rule aims to enhance the excitement and pace of the game. According to the board’s new vice-chairman, Alfrancis Chua, this rule could prevent teams from becoming overly defensive, thereby making the game faster and more exhilarating for fans. "The introduction of the four-point shot is a strategic move to keep the game lively and engaging. It encourages more offensive plays and reduces the tendency for teams to rely solely on defense," Chua explained.

Embracing Change in Basketball

The addition of the four-point shot is a testament to the evolving nature of basketball, where innovation and adaptation are key to maintaining the sport's appeal. By incorporating this feature, the PBA not only aligns itself with modern basketball trends but also sets a precedent for other leagues to consider similar enhancements. This move also demonstrates the PBA’s commitment to keeping the game fresh and exciting for its audience, which is crucial in an era where sports entertainment is continuously evolving.

A Broader Perspective on the Four-Point Shot

The four-point shot, though a novel concept in professional basketball leagues like the PBA, has been part of various exhibition and streetball games for years. Its inclusion in mainstream basketball signifies a shift towards a more dynamic and fan-engaging style of play. This change not only challenges players to expand their shooting range but also introduces new strategic elements for coaches to consider. Teams will need to adjust their defensive strategies to account for the increased scoring potential from beyond the traditional three-point line.

Moreover, the four-point shot could influence younger players and grassroots basketball programs, encouraging them to develop long-range shooting skills early on. This can lead to a new generation of players who are adept at scoring from deeper distances, potentially transforming the way the game is played at all levels.

The introduction of the four-point shot also highlights the growing role of technology and analytics in basketball. Teams and players will likely rely on advanced data analysis to determine the most effective ways to incorporate the four-point shot into their game plans. Understanding the optimal spots on the court for attempting these longer shots, the impact on overall scoring efficiency, and the defensive adjustments needed to counteract this new threat will become crucial aspects of game preparation.

Global Influence and Future Prospects

As basketball continues to grow in popularity worldwide, innovations like the four-point shot can have a significant impact on the global game. Leagues in other countries may look to the PBA's implementation of this rule as a case study for their own potential changes. The international basketball community will be watching closely to see how this new rule affects the flow and excitement of PBA games.
