Two-time NBA All-Star Isaiah Thomas Eyes NBA Return After Milwaukee Bucks Workout

Veteran point guard Isaiah Thomas is reportedly eyeing a return to the National Basketball Association (NBA) after coming off a stint with the Phoenix Suns in the recently concluded 2023/24 NBA season.

According to Shams Charania of The Athletic, Thomas recently attended a workout with the Milwaukee Bucks in Las Vegas. The point guard was not the only veteran who attended the workout; former NBA players Justise Winslow, Hamidou Diallo, Will Barton, and Jaylen Nowell were also present at the session. This mix of seasoned players underscores the competitive nature of the tryout, as teams look to bolster their rosters with experienced talent.

Thomas has fallen off the radar since famously averaging 28.9 points per basketball game for the Boston Celtics in the 2016/17 season. It has been largely downhill for the 35-year-old since then, as he was traded to the Cleveland Cavaliers in the offseason deal that saw Kyrie Irving moving the other way. However, he struggled during his time with the Cavaliers and subsequently bounced around the league, playing for the Los Angeles Lakers (twice), Denver Nuggets, Washington Wizards, New Orleans Pelicans, Dallas Mavericks, and Charlotte Hornets. His journey through various teams highlights the unpredictable nature of professional sports and the challenges athletes face in maintaining peak performance.

Thomas didn’t play for the entirety of the 2022/23 NBA season before signing a 10-day contract with the Phoenix Suns. He averaged 1.9 points per game in six appearances for them, and it’s worth noting that he has not made more than 47 appearances in a season since leaving the Celtics. His limited playtime in recent years reflects the difficulties he has faced in securing a stable position on a team, despite his undeniable talent and past achievements.

While the point guard does bring experience with him, it is unlikely that he will get minutes on the court, especially considering Milwaukee’s existing depth in the backcourt with Damian Lillard, Delon Wright, Gary Trent Jr., among others. The Bucks’ backcourt is stacked with talent, and integrating Thomas into the lineup would require careful consideration of the team's overall strategy and dynamics.

The Bucks were expected to challenge for the NBA championship last season, particularly after acquiring Damian Lillard in the offseason. However, they endured an abject season, with Adrian Griffin being fired midseason and his replacement, Doc Rivers, struggling, exacerbated by an injury to key player Giannis Antetokounmpo. This unexpected turn of events left the team in a difficult position, prompting them to explore various options to strengthen their roster and improve their performance in the upcoming season.

Many believe that despite being a two-time NBA All-Star, Thomas’ time in the league is numbered and signing him would not be beneficial for the Bucks in any way. Critics argue that the team should focus on developing younger talent and building a cohesive unit rather than bringing in a veteran who may not significantly impact their performance.

In an interview with The Athletic, Thomas shared his thoughts on his journey and aspirations. "I've faced many challenges in my career, but my love for the game and my desire to compete at the highest level have never wavered," he said. "I know I still have a lot to offer, and I'm ready to prove myself again."

Justise Winslow, another veteran who attended the workout, expressed his respect for Thomas. "Isaiah's determination and resilience are inspiring," Winslow said. "He's been through a lot, but he's still out here, giving his best. That's the kind of spirit teams need."

Hamidou Diallo, reflecting on the workout session, mentioned, "It was intense, and everyone was pushing their limits. Having guys like Isaiah around only raises the competition level. You can learn a lot from veterans who have been through the ups and downs of the league."

Despite the uncertainties surrounding Thomas' potential return, his passion for the game and his willingness to keep striving for a spot in the NBA are commendable. His journey serves as a reminder of the relentless spirit required to succeed in professional sports.

For fans and analysts alike, Thomas' story is a testament to perseverance. His ability to adapt and continue pursuing his dreams, even when faced with setbacks, highlights the enduring nature of true athleticism. Whether or not he secures a spot with the Bucks or another NBA team, his dedication to the sport remains undeniable.
