The world of Philippine sports is no stranger to controversy. One of the most well known decisions in recent memory was the Games and Amusements Board (GAB) ruling on John Amores a former Northport Batang Pier player. His professional license was officially terminated after his involvement in a shooting earlier this year.

The Shooting Case of John Amores

On Sunday, GAB announced its decision to revoke John Amores license citing conduct unbecoming of a professional basketball player. This came in response to his involvement in a shooting incident in Laguna last September. The severity of the decision reflects GAB’s commitment to maintaining professionalism in Philippine sports.

John Amores had suspended by PBA indefinitely, a move criticized by fans for being too lenient given the gravity of his actions. Many believe the revocation of John Amores license was a necessary step to ensure accountability. However Amores case isn’t an isolated one. Over the years, other players have also faced strict sanctions for various offenses from game-fixing scandals to on-court violence.

Stain on Philippine Sports in Game-Fixing and On-Court Violence

One of the gravest offenses in professional basketball sports is game-fixing. In early 2021, the Pilipinas VisMin Super Cup became embroiled in controversy following a suspicious match between the Siquijor Mystics and Lapu-Lapu City. The investigation revealed game-fixing activities, leading to the revocation of professional licenses for ten individuals.

Among them was Ryan Buenafe, a four-time UAAP champion, alongside Peter Buenafe, Frederick Rodriguez, Juan Aspiras, Joseph Quiro, Jan Penaflor, Joshua Alcober, Gene Belleza and Michael Calomot. Additionally, Mystics head coach Joel Palapal also faced the same penalty.

Meanwhile, on-court violence has also resulted in severe repercussions. In 2015, Alvin Pua, a former PBA D-League coach, received a lifetime ban from the league after assaulting a referee. This incident highlighted the importance of maintaining discipline and professionalism in the sport.

Teams Are Not Spared from Penalties

It’s not just individual players who face the consequences of misdeeds; entire teams have also been penalized by GAB. A prime example is the case of Global FC, a Philippines Football League (PFL) club. The team faced a ban from applying or renewing its license due to complaints of unpaid wages.

When the club failed to respond to a show-cause order from GAB, the decision to revoke its license was finalized. This serves as a stern reminder that teams and organizations must uphold their responsibilities to their players and the league.

Warnings and Temporary Suspensions

While GAB has imposed lifetime bans on certain individuals, it has also opted for temporary suspensions or penalties as warnings to players. Calvin Abueva’s case stands out in this regard. Known for his aggressive playstyle, Abueva faced a suspension in the late 2010s due to violent conduct on the court and allegations related to his personal life. GAB suspended his license for over a year while he was playing for the Phoenix Fuel Masters in the PBA.

When Abueva’s license was reinstated during the PBA’s bubble season, it came with strict conditions, including mandatory drug tests and seminars. Since then, Abueva has managed to steer clear of long-term suspensions, showing that redemption is possible with the right attitude and compliance.

Is Lifetime Ban Really for Life?

The term “lifetime ban” implies permanent exclusion, but history has shown that this penalty is not always irreversible. A notable case is that of former PBA import Renaldo Balkman. In 2013, Balkman was banned for life after a physical altercation during a game between the Alaska Aces and the Petron Blaze Boosters, for whom he had played only seven games.

But the PBA lifted Balkman’s ban in 2018 after he sought the blessing of those involved in the incident and demonstrated genuine remorse. This decision reflects the league’s willingness to offer second chances to players who show accountability and a desire to reform.

In contrast, John Amores’s case presents a more complicated scenario. Given his history of multiple incidents, it’s difficult to see how he could justify a return to professional basketball. Moreover, with criminal charges still pending, his future in the sport remains uncertain.

The Importance of Integrity in Sports

The cases of Amores, Buenafe, Abueva, and others serve as reminders of the importance of integrity in sports. Whether it’s game-fixing, on-court violence, or financial misconduct, these actions tarnish the reputation of athletes, teams, and leagues. GAB’s strict enforcement of penalties ensures that professionalism and fair play are upheld in Philippine sports.

For athletes, maintaining a clean record is not just about avoiding penalties; it’s also about building trust with fans, sponsors, and teammates. For teams, adhering to league standards and fulfilling contractual obligations is essential for sustaining their reputation and operations.
