The PBA Season 49 Governor’s Cup finals went into an interesting twist on Wednesday, November 6 when the TNT Tropang Giga dealt Barangay Ginebra San Miguel a devastating 99-72 blow in Game 5 in the Smart Araneta Coliseum. This was very important to TNT since the victory put them at the helm of the best-of-seven series, 3-2, as they face Game 6.
It was the Tropang Giga that proved hungry from the start, and the team established itself in the first half. At half time TNT was leading 48-25 as their offense dictated the game from start to finish amping up their defence to avoid Llamados’ counterattack. The Tropang Giga made 58% of their two-point shots, while the Barangay Ginebra only converted 27% of their shots in the initial 24 minutes of the first half.
In terms of individual contributions, TNT’s Rondae Hollis-Jefferson played the best game, wherein he scored 16 points, with 10 rebounds at 31:10 starting minutes. His performance was complemented by solid contributions from his teammates: RR Pogoy scored an additional 16, Calvin Oftana had 15, and WIlliams and Jayson Castro brought in 11 and 10 points, respectively. This distributed scoring allowed TNT to run through with a resounding win over Barangay Ginebra having dominated all the aspects of the game.
Justin Brownlee will finish Game 5 with 8 measly points on 3-for-13 FG. Maybe he's sick or what, but no excuses na.

He shit the bed tonight.
Other than Game 4, JB has been completely outclassed ni RHJ.
And I'm a big Brownlee fan. 😔
While the Tropang Giga were dominating in almost every aspect, the Barangay Ginebra import Justin Brownlee will have to say that he faced one of the worst games in his PBA career. Of course, one has to give credit to TNT yet again for stifling Brownlee, who has been one of the best players in the league since signing with the team back in 2016. He scored only 8 points for a career-low, going only 3 of 13 from the field. This was the first time Brownlee did not score in double-digits in his PBA stint.
That was a far cry from his impressive showing in game four when he scored 34 points for Barangay Ginebra on 11 field goals on 16 attempts. From the finals series, Brownlee has been a mainstay on Ginebra’s run but TNT has quite effectively shut him down mainly in games besides the fifth. As a result, in the current finals series, Brownlee is having 20.4 points per game which is surprisingly drastically below the 28.3 points that he had in his semis.
Nevertheless, Brownlee had a rough night still, Barangay Ginebra head coach Tim Cone continues to have faith in his prized colt. “You do not want to judge a player based on one game alone,” commented Cone. We are familiar with what Justin can offer and as certain about him in the next game. We will do what needs to be done, and get him back to where he needs to be."
The win in Game 5 served as a big lift for TNT but Chot Reyes is too smart to let his players think that Brownlee and Barangay Ginebra are easy beating. In his post-game interview after Game 5, Reyes admitted that Brownlee is far from his best but he anticipated that he will step up in Game 6.
“We know that’s not going to work in the next game,” Reyes said. Their NT keeper Coach Tim Cone, already sat him down early for this game.” It was sort of getting him ready for a one-step-back move—two steps forward in the next game. So we just need to be ready. We expect him to come out strong, as should the rest of the Ginebra team.” So we just have to set our alarms and be ready for a strong reaction from Ginebra in the next match.
Reyes and the Tropang Giga are very well aware o of this fact and they know that though they are placed far ahead, they cannot sit back and relax. Being cognizant of the fight in Ginebra, TNT should expect a very spirited battle in game 6.
The now infamous Game 6 had become a virtual ‘do or die’ contest for the Barangay Ginebra if they still intend to stretch the series for a deciding game seven. For Brownlee to score 25 points in the last game, he is expected to perform much better than that in the next game To add to this, Ginebra has to step up its defense and improve off the offense this game has proven to be one of the most significant turning points in the series. Loss in game 6 hands the Governor’s Cup crown to TNT while winning would push the series to a decisive game 7.
The question now remains: can Brownlee come back from a disgustingly poor game 5 showing and bring his team to another win? Ginebra fans would anticipate a much better performance from their prized player for them to keep on dreaming of that championship title.
And as the series progresses into a fresh Game 6, the sports bettors would surely be where the action happens. Since the championship is so close in this league, the result of this game could help to sway betting lines. For those who want to place bets, it is crucial to understand the flow of the game and the chances that big players like Justin Brownlee would return to the game.
