The Los Angeles Lakers have made significant strides in strengthening their squad for the upcoming 2024/25 National Basketball Association (NBA) season. One of their latest moves is the acquisition of Christian Koloko, a promising 7-foot center, on a two-way contract. This signing is seen as a strategic move to bolster their frontcourt depth, especially after the injury to Christian Wood, a key player in their lineup.

However, Koloko’s signing comes with some concerns due to his medical history. The young center had previously been sidelined with a career-threatening blood clot issue, which raised doubts about his availability. Nonetheless, despite the uncertainties, the Lakers remain optimistic that Koloko will suit up for them this season.

Christian Koloko’s Signing and Injury Concerns

On Tuesday, September 17, 2024 (Philippine Standard Time), the Lakers’ management officially announced the signing of Christian Koloko. The team waived forward Blake Hinson to make room on the roster for the 24-year-old center. Koloko’s addition is seen as a significant boost, but it doesn’t come without concerns.

Koloko missed the entire 2023/24 season due to blood clot complications. Blood clots are no small matter, especially in high-performance sports. For many athletes, it can mean the end of their careers. Medical experts had to evaluate his condition closely before he was cleared to play again. Although Koloko has now been cleared to participate in basketball activities, there are still a few steps left for him to get back on the court.

The Lakers' Confidence in Koloko's Return

NBA insider Dave McMenamin from ESPN shed light on Koloko’s current situation in a recent report. McMenamin explained that while Koloko has made progress in overcoming his health issues, there are still a few medical hurdles left to clear before he can officially represent the Lakers in the upcoming season. According to McMenamin, the league’s "fitness-to-play panel" must approve Koloko before he can resume full basketball activities.

This panel consists of three doctors: one appointed by the NBA, one by the players’ union, and a third doctor agreed upon by both parties. They assess whether a player is fit to return to competitive play after significant health concerns.

“Koloko, the No. 33 pick in the 2022 NBA draft by the Toronto Raptors, missed all of last season with a blood clot issue and will still need to be cleared by the league’s ‘fitness-to-play panel’ consisting of an NBA-appointed doctor, a players union-appointed doctor, and a mutually agreed-upon third doctor before he could participate in basketball activities for Los Angeles,” McMenamin wrote in a post.

While this process is ongoing, the Lakers remain hopeful about Koloko’s availability. The team has already conducted their independent assessment of his condition and, according to sources, they are optimistic that he will be cleared to play.

“The Lakers have conducted an independent assessment of the 24-year-old Koloko’s condition and have reason for optimism that he will be able to play this season, sources told ESPN,” McMenamin added.

Christian Koloko was selected as the 33rd overall pick in the 2022 NBA Draft by the Toronto Raptors. His rookie season showed glimpses of his potential, particularly on the defensive end. In 58 games, Koloko averaged 3.1 points, 2.9 rebounds, and one block per game. He played an average of 13.8 minutes per game, showcasing his shot-blocking abilities and defensive versatility.

Despite his promising start, Koloko’s health concerns came to light in January 2024, when he was diagnosed with blood clots. The Raptors, facing uncertainty around his condition, decided to waive him. This led to his placement into the NBA’s Fitness-to-Play panel, effectively putting his basketball career on hold while he underwent treatment and evaluation.

Now that Koloko has made strides in his recovery, the Lakers saw an opportunity to sign him on a two-way contract, which allows him to split his time between the Lakers and their G League affiliate, the South Bay Lakers.

Addressing Depth Concerns in the Lakers' Frontcourt

Koloko’s signing addresses a crucial need for the Lakers. The team found itself in desperate need of frontcourt depth following the injury to Christian Wood, who underwent knee surgery for the second time in 2024. Reports suggest that Wood will be out for at least eight weeks, leaving a significant gap in the Lakers' roster.

Koloko’s defensive presence, shot-blocking ability, and rim protection make him a valuable asset for the Lakers. While his offensive game is still developing, his ability to alter shots and anchor the defense is exactly what the Lakers need, especially as they gear up for a highly competitive season.

Additionally, Koloko's two-way contract is a cost-effective move for the Lakers, who are keen on staying below the NBA’s "second apron" – a punitive salary cap threshold. This financial flexibility allows the Lakers to keep options open as they look to make further roster improvements throughout the season.

Koloko's Role in the 2024/25 Season

Once cleared by the NBA’s fitness panel, Koloko will join the Lakers as one of their three two-way players. Under NBA rules, two-way players are eligible to participate in up to 50 games with their NBA team, while the rest of their season is spent playing in the G League.

Koloko will be joined by fellow two-way players Colin Castleton and Armel Traore, both of whom also offer depth in the frontcourt. Together, the trio will provide the Lakers with much-needed size and versatility as they navigate the long NBA season.

Despite being limited to 50 games, Koloko’s presence in the lineup could prove crucial in critical moments, particularly on the defensive end. If Koloko performs well, it’s possible the Lakers could convert his two-way contract into a full NBA contract later in the season, should they need his services on a more permanent basis.

Koloko's Potential Impact on the Lakers

Koloko’s presence on the Lakers' roster could have a significant impact, especially when considering the team’s need for interior defense. With Anthony Davis often taking on a heavy defensive load, having a young and athletic center like Koloko to share those responsibilities could relieve some of the pressure on Davis.

Furthermore, Koloko’s shot-blocking ability and defensive instincts could make him an important part of the Lakers' rotation, particularly in matchups against teams with dominant frontcourt players. While his offensive game may still be raw, his contributions on defense could make him a valuable role player for the Lakers this season.

Promising Addition Despite Concerns

While concerns about Christian Koloko’s fitness remain, the Los Angeles Lakers are optimistic that the young center will be cleared to play and contribute to their 2024/25 NBA campaign. His signing not only addresses a key area of need for the team, but it also offers them flexibility as they aim to stay competitive while managing their NBA salary cap.

Koloko's potential, combined with the Lakers’ independent medical assessment, gives hope that he can overcome his past health challenges and make a meaningful impact on the court. Lakers fans and NBA enthusiasts alike will be watching closely to see how Koloko’s journey unfolds as the season approaches.
