Record eight-time Ballon d’Or winner Lionel Messi has opened up about his future in football, revealing that Inter Miami will be the last club that he plays for as the superstar comes to the end of his illustrious career.
Messi, who signed for Inter Miami in the summer of 2023, is contracted with the Major League Soccer (MLS) team until 2025. The 36-year-old has been heavily linked with a return to his boyhood club Newell’s Old Boys, although he confirmed in an interview with ESPN that Inter will be his last club.
“Inter Miami will be my last club. I love playing football. I enjoy everything even more because I am aware that there is less and less left. I’m not ready to leave football. I have done this all my life, I love playing football, I enjoy training, the day-to-day, the matches. And yes, there is always a little bit of fear that it’s all over,” Messi stated.

Messi continues to display on a regular basis why he is widely recognized as the greatest player in the history of football. He has scored 14 goals in all competitions for Inter Miami this season as they find themselves currently placed at the top of the Eastern Conference.
In fact, the striker is Barcelona’s record goalscorer with 672 goals, while registering 32 goals and 35 assists in his two-year spell with Paris Saint-Germain. His storied career has seen him win 40 trophies for club and country, including four UEFA Champions League honors, with the crowning glory coming in 2022 after he led Argentina to the World Cup trophy.
Messi is currently preparing to defend the Copa America title with Argentina, with the tournament scheduled to start on 20 June in the United States of America (USA). He returned for Argentina for the first time in six months last week, playing a key role in Argentina’s 1-0 victory over Ecuador in a Copa America warm-up fixture.
Argentina has been drawn in Group A along with Peru, Chile, and Canada. They open their Copa America campaign against Canada on Friday, June 21 (Philippine Standard Time), at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta.
