Manny Pacquiao has won a three-year legal battle against Paradigm Sports Management. The journey which included contractual conflicts and legal wrangling came to an end when a California court ruled in favor of the former eight-division world champion. This victory not only supports Pacquiao but also highlights the legal challenges of sports management contracts, particularly in the highly regulated industry of boxing.
Judge Walter Schwarm of the Superior Court of the State of California, County of Orange, Central Justice Center issued the decision. On August 12, 2024, Judge Schwarm issued his final statement of decision, declaring Manny Pacquiao's contract with Paradigm Sports Management void due to "illegality."

The judge determined that the contracts signed by Pacquiao and Paradigm Sports were not legally enforceable because Paradigm Sports was not licensed as a manager under California law, which is a necessary requirement for managing boxers in the state.
The crux of the case hinged on whether Paradigm Sports Management, and its CEO Audie Attar, were properly licensed to manage boxers in California. During the trial, Attar testified that he did not believe he had a manager’s license for boxers in the State of California and admitted that he could not recall if he held such a license during the relevant period of 2020 and 2021.
The California State Athletic Commission (CSAC) confirmed that Attar had been issued a manager’s license from April 14, 2016, to April 30, 2017. However, this license had expired, and Attar failed to complete the required annual review to maintain it. This lapse in licensing was a critical factor in the court's decision to declare the contract with Pacquiao void.
Pacquiao’s legal team, led by Atty. Jason Aniel, expressed satisfaction with the court’s ruling. "We are pleased that the court made its final decision on the legal issues in Mr. Pacquiao’s favor," Aniel stated. He emphasized that the decision rendered the contract that Paradigm sought to enforce illegal, given the company's failure to meet licensing requirements.
"The decision negates the jury’s findings back in May of 2023. We thank the court’s time and effort in this matter. Mr. Pacquiao thanks his fans for their patience while the court fully resolved all the legal issues," Aniel added.
Sean Gibbons, the President of Manny Pacquiao’s MP Promotions, also welcomed the decision. Gibbons reiterated that Pacquiao had not done anything wrong and that the ruling confirmed the illegality of Paradigm Sports Management’s contract. “Manny Pacquiao has finally been proven innocent. He did nothing wrong as the Superior Court of California has already announced its final statement of decision declaring that the contract offered by Paradigm was void due to illegality. God bless Manny Pacquiao,” Gibbons said.
It is worth noting that this final court decision comes after a U.S. jury initially ruled against Pacquiao in May 2023. The jury ordered the boxing legend to pay Paradigm Sports $5.1 million, with $3.3 million for breach of contract and $1.8 million for breach of the implied covenant of good faith and fair dealing. This ruling was based on the assumption that the contract between Pacquiao and Paradigm Sports was valid and enforceable.
However, Pacquiao’s legal team quickly filed a motion challenging the ruling, arguing that Paradigm Sports Management was not licensed as a manager under California law. This argument ultimately swayed the court, leading to the decision that has now cleared Pacquiao of any wrongdoing.
This case underscores the importance of adhering to legal requirements in sports management, particularly in a state like California, where boxing game is heavily regulated. Managers must be licensed to ensure they are qualified to represent athletes and handle the legal and financial aspects of their careers. The failure to maintain such licensing can lead to contracts being declared void, as seen in Pacquiao’s case.
For athletes, this ruling is a reminder of the importance of thoroughly vetting management companies and ensuring that all legal requirements are met before entering into contracts. For sports management companies, it serves as a cautionary tale about the potential consequences of overlooking regulatory compliance.
This legal victory adds another chapter to the storied career of Manny Pacquiao, who is not only a boxing legend but also a significant figure in Philippine politics and global sports. Pacquiao’s career has been marked by numerous achievements, including being the only boxer in history to win world titles in eight different weight divisions. His legal victory against Paradigm Sports Management is yet another testament to his resilience, both inside and outside the ring.
As Pacquiao moves forward, this case will likely be remembered as a significant moment in his post-boxing career, where he successfully defended his rights and reputation against a major sports management entity.
