Strategic Roster Moves for Financial Flexibility

In a significant move ahead of the 2024/25 National Basketball Association (NBA) season, the Phoenix Suns have decided to waive forwards Nasir Little and EJ Liddell. The announcement, made on Thursday, August 22 (Philippine Standard Time), has sparked discussions among fans and analysts alike about the team's future strategy.

Nassir Little's Tenure with the Suns

Phoenix’s decision to release both players was first reported by basketball NBA game insider and The Athletic’s Shams Charania on the social networking platform X (formerly known as Twitter). Charania's post read, “The Phoenix Suns are waiving forwards Nasir Little and EJ Liddell. By releasing both, the Suns open up a roster spot and create flexibility for signings and trades during the season. Suns will stretch the three years and $22 million remaining on Little’s deal.”

Nassir Little's Tenure with the Suns

This move reflects a strategic decision by the Suns’ front office, allowing them to stretch the $22 million remaining on Little’s contract over seven years, rather than absorbing the entire amount over the next three years. This financial maneuver means that the Suns will pay Little approximately $3 million annually for the next seven years, creating much-needed cap space for future signings and trades. Such a move aligns with the Suns' broader goal of maintaining financial flexibility while building a competitive roster around their star players.

Nasir Little, a 24-year-old forward, was originally selected as the 25th overall pick by the Portland Trail Blazers in the 2019 NBA Draft. He was later acquired by the Suns in a three-team trade that sent Deandre Ayton to Portland and brought Jusuf Nurkic, Grayson Allen, and Keon Johnson to Phoenix on September 27, 2023.

Despite his potential, Little struggled to find his footing with the Suns, making 45 appearances but averaging a career-low 3.4 points per game while shooting just 30 percent from beyond the arc. His overall career averages stand at 5.5 points and 2.9 rebounds per game, with shooting percentages of 45.2 percent from the field and 33 percent from three-point range over 237 regular-season games. Little's inability to replicate his early promise in Phoenix ultimately led to his release, as the Suns seek to optimize their roster for the upcoming season.

EJ Liddell's Brief Stint in Phoenix

EJ Liddell's journey with the Suns has been similarly challenging. Drafted in the second round of the 2022 NBA Draft by the New Orleans Pelicans, Liddell found himself traded multiple times before landing in Phoenix. Unfortunately, he failed to make a significant impact during his short stint with the Suns, averaging just 0.5 points per game in eight appearances. Liddell's release indicates the Suns' commitment to focusing on players who can contribute immediately and help the team achieve its goals.

Focus on Immediate Contributors

According to the report, part of the reason for waiving Little and Liddell is the Suns' confidence in their rookie forwards, Ryan Dunn and Oso Ighodaro. Phoenix officials are reportedly "high on rookies Ryan Dunn and Oso Ighodaro," believing that the releases of Little and Liddell will create more opportunities for these young talents to contribute next season. This move also positions the Suns to make additional roster adjustments as the season progresses, keeping them flexible for potential trades and signings that could enhance their championship aspirations.

The Suns are clearly looking to rebuild their roster around their star trio of Kevin Durant, Devin Booker, and Bradley Beal. This core of superstars gives the Suns a formidable foundation, but the supporting cast will be crucial in determining how far they can go in the playoffs. Last season, the Suns finished sixth in the NBA Western Conference standings with a 49-33 win-loss record, but their campaign ended in disappointment as they were eliminated by the Minnesota Timberwolves in the first round of the playoffs. The front office's recent moves suggest a commitment to improving on that result by building a more balanced and cohesive team.

The decision to waive Little and Liddell, while surprising to some, is a calculated risk by the Suns. By prioritizing financial flexibility and giving their rookies a chance to shine, Phoenix is setting the stage for a potentially dynamic season. The Suns’ management understands that to compete at the highest level, they must make tough decisions that balance immediate needs with long-term goals.

Looking Ahead: Building Around the Star Trio

Core Players and Future Aspirations

For fans and bettors alike, keeping an eye on the Suns’ roster moves will be essential as the 2024/25 season unfolds. With a mix of seasoned stars and emerging talent, the Suns are poised to be one of the most intriguing teams to watch.
