The Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) has made a bold move in the 2024 season by introducing a four-point shot in the Governor’s Cup. This new rule, which allows players to score an extra point for shots made beyond the 27-foot arc from the basket, is aimed at enhancing the excitement and pace of the game. PBA commissioner Willie Marcial confirmed this development on Monday, July 22, revealing that the board of governors had unanimously agreed to incorporate this change into the league's format.
However, the introduction of the four-point shot has not been universally welcomed. Seven-time NBA champion Robert Horry, renowned for his clutch three-point shooting and pivotal performances in crucial games, has expressed strong reservations about the new rule. Known for his pivotal three-point shots during his illustrious career, Horry’s perspective on the change is particularly noteworthy given his extensive experience in high-stakes basketball.
“20 years removed from the #NBA, and they still want to see me.” 🫶🏻

During an interaction with fans at the NBA Store in Megamall, Robert Horry shared his thoughts on the four-point shot. He remarked, “Well, you know, that’s the way the game is now. So many kids want to shoot the long ball. But then I understand it’s about getting buckets. It doesn’t matter if it’s two, three, or four in this case. Get buckets and do it with a high efficiency.”
Horry’s comments reflect a broader sentiment among traditionalists who believe that fundamental aspects of the game should be preserved. He expressed concern that the emphasis on long-range shooting might overshadow other important elements of basketball, such as teamwork and defense.
“So to me, when you add a four-point play, it makes kids not really want to play the game. They just want to shoot the ball. Play the game the right way, get buckets, have fun, play defense, and just enjoy the game,” Horry continued. “That’s what basketball is. One of those sports that brings so many people together. It’s just fun to watch people play and watch people understand it.”
Horry’s career is a testament to his skill and versatility on the court. Despite being known for his three-point shooting, he has always emphasized the importance of playing the game the right way. As the record-holder for the most three-point shots made in a playoff game without a miss, as well as the most steals in an NBA Finals game, Horry’s shooting ability was pivotal in his team’s success. However, he candidly admitted that he would not have incorporated a four-point shot into his game if it had been part of the NBA during his playing days.
“Probably not because a man must know his limitations. And I know the college line was easy. The NBA lane was kind of hard for me. So with practice, I probably could. But it wouldn’t be something I would incorporate in my game just because that’s not who I was. You know, that’s the biggest key to winning championships. You have to understand who you are and be able to help the team out. And that way, you can make the team move forward,” Horry explained.
Horry’s career began when he was selected as the 11th overall pick by the Houston Rockets in the 1992 NBA draft. He quickly made a name for himself with his clutch performances and leadership on the court. Over his career, he played for the Houston Rockets, Phoenix Suns, Los Angeles Lakers, and San Antonio Spurs, winning NBA championships with all four teams.
Horry is one of only nine players to have won seven or more NBA championships and is one of only four players to have won back-to-back championships with two different teams. Notably, in 2007, he became only the second player to win NBA championships with three different teams.
At the time of his retirement, Robert Horry held the record for the most playoff games played, appearing in 244 games through the 2008 playoffs, surpassing the legendary Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. His achievements underscore his remarkable career and his understanding of what it takes to succeed at the highest level of basketball.
While the PBA's four-point shot rule is an attempt to modernize the game and attract a new generation of fans, Robert Horry’s critique highlights the ongoing debate about the direction of basketball. His perspective offers valuable insight into the potential implications of such changes on the essence of the game.
Whether you agree with Robert Horry’s view or not, the introduction of the four-point shot is sure to spark ongoing discussions among basketball enthusiasts and players alike.
