Bet on Why Will Jannik Sinner Will Win the 2024 ATP Finals
November 13, 2024

It would be a huge mistake to bet against Jannik Sinner at this very moment. The group stage of the 2024 ATP Finals is about to conclude, and we don’t see why Sinner, who hails from South Tyrol, won’t win his first season-ending championship of the ATP Tour.

Sinner, the winner of the 2019 Next Generation ATP Finals, is leading the 2024 ATP Tour with 7 ATP Tour titles including the Australian Open and the US Open, his first two Grand Slam titles. He also won the Masters 1000 tournaments in Miami, Cincinnati, and Shanghai.

He’s the prize money leader and the points leader as well. It was a spectacular season, if not almost dominant, if not for the doping case that might ban him from the 2025 ATP Tour. We’ll get to that part a little later.

The 2024 ATP Finals marked the first time that Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, and Novak Djokovic, the so-called Big Three, aren’t competing in the season-ending championship since 2001. A new era? You can bet your tennis racquet and tennis balls. It could’ve been a wide-open tournament, but Sinner is about to play in front of the home fans.

ATP Finals Group Play

The top eight qualifiers are divided into two groups, and they are named after Ilie Năstase and John Newcombe, who have nine Grand Slam titles between them.

Năstase, nicknamed Nasty, is the first tennis player to hold the top spot in the computerized ATP rankings. Newcombe, nicknamed Newk, was honored with the Newcombe Medal, which would recognize the outstanding tennis players from Down Under.

Here are the finalists and their standings (in parenthesis):

Ilie Năstase Group

  • Jannik Sinner (1)
  • Daniil Medvedev (3)
  • Taylor Fritz (5)
  • Alex de Minaur (7)

John Newcombe Group

  • Alexander Zverev (2)
  • Carlos Alcaraz (4)
  • Casper Ruud (6)
  • Andrey Rublev (8)

The finals weeks prior to the 2024 ATP Finals were interesting (to say the least). Djokovic, the two-time defending champion, qualified for the season-ending championships after reaching the finals of the 2024 Rolex Shanghai Masters.

However, he himself admitted that he doesn’t have the motivation to play in many tennis tournaments after the retirement of Andy Murray and Rafael Nadal. And (unauthorized?) photos of him and his family vacationing in Maldives were posted on social media. It happened during the 2024 Rolex Paris Masters.

Djokovic’s withdrawal enabled Casper Ruud, Alex de Minaur, and Andrey Rublev to qualify for the ATP Finals without playing in ATP 250 tournaments in Belgrade and Metz. It was quite a relief for de Minaur, who had to fight through a hip injury.

It would be his first appearance in the season-ending championship. It also marked the first time that Stefanos Tsitsipas, the 2019 ATP Finals champion, did not qualify for this big event since 2018. Many tennis bettors were expecting it after they noticed his dip in form this season.

Sinner was impressive during group play, defeating Alex de Minaur and Taylor Fritz in straight sets. The top-ranked Italian player will face Daniil Medvedev in his final group-play match. The Russian may have won the 2020 ATP Finals, but we don’t see him posing a threat against Sinner. As a matter of fact, we don’t foresee a three-set match.

The John Newcombe Group is intriguing at the moment such that a semifinal match between Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz might happen this weekend.

Many tennis fans aren’t surprised at Casper Ruud upsetting Alcaraz in their first match in Inalpi Arena. The Spaniard had a great first half, culminating with a Continental Slam. A Continental Slam is a term for a tennis player winning the French Open and Wimbledon in the same year.

The long, grueling season caught up with Alcaraz in the second half; fans were shocked at the mild-mannered Alcaraz smashing his tennis racquet during his opening match against Gaël Monfils in the 2024 Western and Southern Open. Some saw it as his frustration at what was beyond his control.

Can Alcaraz rise to the occasion? Yes. He’ll play Zverev, the two-time ATP Finals champion, later. The two split their ten matches. They met each other three times this year, though. And Alcaraz won their last two encounters. If the head-to-head (H2H) matches were an indication, then we can see the Spaniard finishing group play with two wins and a loss. And Zverez is likely to end up with a similar win-loss ratio. What next?

Here’s What the Semifinals Look Like

  • Jannik Sinner vs. Alexander Zverev
  • Carlos Alcaraz vs. Taylor Fritz

We foresee Jannik Sinner winning his final group-play match against Daniil Medvedev. The two may have played fourteen times and both players are tied (at 7-7), but Sinner won their last two matches. And both matches are played on hard courts.

On the other hand, we don’t foresee Taylor Fritz having trouble against Alex de Minaur. If the Australian is healthier, their match might go the distance. An upset is likely. Next year perhaps. That’s how group play in the Ilie Năstase Group would end.

The outcome of group play in the John Newcombe Group would be a tough call, but we would bet on Alcaraz having the superior win-loss ratio. It would enable him to finish first.

The semifinal match between Jannik Sinner and Alexander Zverev will be very interesting for a number of reasons. If Zverev, a two-time Grand Slam finalist, can play offensively, then there’s a chance of him upsetting Sinner.

The German has to contend with the home fans, though. If Zverev could summon the winning that won him the Tokyo Olympics gold medal, then anything can happen during that match. But Sinner is playing well. We can go on and on.

The semifinal match between Carlos Alcaraz and Taylor Fritz is intriguing, and we would bet on the American winning this match and reaching his first finals appearance in the season-ending championship. The Spaniard may have won the two matches they played this season, but recent results showed that he would need to recharge sooner.

Why Jannik Sinner Will Win the Finals Decisively?

The final match of the 2024 ATP Finals is a rematch of the 2024 US Open finals, and Jannik Sinner will dominate the finals. The home crowd will energize him. We can see the Italian winning that match in an hour. More or less. The 2024 ATP Finals will be Sinner’s eighth tour title, the most by any active player. But our forecast doesn’t end here.

Will Jannik Sinner Dominate the 2025 ATP Tour?

Let’s start with Sinner’s doping case: We don’t see him receiving a ban.

The top brass in the ATP has shown double standards in this issue, turning a blind eye on top players. Who can’t forget what Andre Agassi did? The American himself admitted that he took crystal meth in his autobiography, but it didn’t result in him not getting those high-paying gigs.

Agassi will be the upcoming Team World captain in the Laver Cup. Sinner maintains his innocence, but tennis pundits and fans know that tennis is a mental game. And this is where the Italian is head and shoulders above the rest.

Nick Kyrgios will return to the tour early next year. And the mercurial Australian player is one of those players who is vocal about Sinner being banned from the tour. It remains to be seen if the two will face each other in the 2025 Australian Open, but the organizers would do fans a huge favor if they would be drawn in the opening round. Kyrgios’s mental fortitude is a major issue, but we foresee a four-set match.

Novak Djokovic intends to keep on playing in the major tournaments, as he aims to be the first tennis player, male or female, to win 25 Grand Slam titles. But we don’t see it happening in Melbourne. Alexei Popyrin, who won the Masters 1000 tournament in Montreal, upset Djokovic in the third round of the US Open. If the two meet in the Australian Open, we see the Sydneysider winning their next encounter in a more convincing fashion. If not Popyrin, then Sinner.

Darren Cahill, Sinner’s coach, announced that Sinner might skip the Masters 1000 event in Monte Carlo. If the Italian does, it should increase his chances of winning his first Mutua Madrid Open title.

Sinner withdrew from the quarterfinals of this year’s Mutua Madrid Open due to hip injury, so skipping Monte Carlo would keep him from adjusting from hard court to clay in a very short time. Or keep him healthy during the clay-court swing.

It’s not hard to foresee Carlos Alcaraz in the mix, and there’s a possibility of him completing a career Grand Slam in Melbourne. Sinner can win one or two majors next year, though. We predict the Italian winning eight, or nine, titles. If Alcaraz doesn’t play smartly, then the 2025 ATP Tour belongs to Sinner.
