The PBA reminds basketball fans of the Season 49 Governor’s Cup finals that are set to showcase Barangay Ginebra San Miguel and TNT Tropang Giga. Either way, another powerhouse duo of coaches – Tim Cone at the helm of San Mig Coffee Mixers and Chot Reyes of the Talk ‘N Text Tropang Texters will dispute the championship – this is the first time in 12 years the two coaching icons will do battle in the finals. There exists a coaching rivalry between the Spike Lee-endorsed Cone and the feared Andres Reyes, though both have been very careful to gloss over this rather than pass the buck to the dogs on the court, the players that will determine the winner of the series.
This clash is rich in historical significance since Cone and Reyes have between them 34 PBA titles and 11 PBA Coach of the Year awards for seasons played throughout their careers. It started in the early 1990s when Reyes began working for Cone in Alaska Aces as Cone’s assistant coach. Since then they have encountered one another not a few occasions, and each rightfully receiving their due accolade – both have been hardworking contributors to Philippine basketball. Amazingly, this will only be the seventh PBA finals series match-up between the two teams which to date are at par 3-3. To viewers, this is an interesting decider and surely one of the games to look forward to in this PBA season.

Cone and Reyes have known each other before Zubov’s arrival or even the formation of the PBA in the early 90s. Cone, an American-born tactician famed for his Triangle Offense also appreciated a young Reyes, who equally shared the passion in basketball. With Cone as his coach, Reyes sharpened his abilities and the flavor of his coaching compass – severe and iron-hard when it comes to defense – incredibly versatile when handling his players. After that particular encounter, both made themselves a staple by becoming tagged as the best and most powerful PBA coaches who defined the transformation of basketball in the Philippines.
The rivalry between Cone and Reyes teams has placed the two as winners as well as losers on various occasions. Reyes’ first time meeting with Cone during the finals was in the 1994 Commissioner’s Cup where the Purefoods team coached by SuperCoach Reyes defeated the Alaska Aces coached by Romping. Since then, each has won several more titles with other teams with Cone now boasting 25 PBA titles while Reyes has nine titles and is also highly respected. This respect for each other is seen as both Barker and McClinton have frequently commented on how they have acquired plenty from each other in the years.
As Cone said, “He knows what I like to do and I know what he likes to do.” Friends for so long we’ve been around, we’ve spent considerable time analyzing each other.” Reyes further responded to this in kind by saying, “I don’t look at the past. As for me, it is only the present – the thing which is immediately significant.
Contrary to expectations media try to build up a Cone-Reyes rivalry as a major factor in the series, both coaches have expressed the view that the players are the ones who will decide the results of the series. And in the final press conference, he quipped, ‘It’s not going to be me and Chot.’ That’s all going to be left to Rondae and Justin and the people around them. The players in the two camps are going to be the ones to determine this series which is exactly how it should be.
The freaks of nature Cone mentioned are Barangay Ginebra’s Justin Brownlee who has been ord inaugurated as one of the significant factors in this finals and TNT Tropang Giga’s Rondae Hollis-Jefferson. Among PBA imports, Brownlee is often recognized as one of, if not the best, to ever set foot in the league; and Hollis-Jefferson is a scorer with energy and defense to boot. Brownlee and Hollis-Jefferson’s ability to perform well can set the pace for the games, let alone a bestof-seven series.
Cone and Reyes may be knowledgeable and masters of game strategies but they know their role as coaches is to give that direction and let the players be the ones to go for it. In the last interview, Reyes said, “It will all hinge on how that is applied on the basketball court and the team that can impose their style and their desire on the game.” I know there is a lot of talk about me and Tim, but I’m sure he will agree: ultimately the players are going to decide the fate of the series.”
This final is Cone and Reyes’s seventh in a PBA finals series. Each coach has won three of their prior meetings with one another, so this series is a rematch or a tiebreaker, which makes it even more exciting. Viewers will be waiting keenly to see the brilliant strategic planner amongst these two experienced organizers bring out the force that puts his team through a victory.
The last time Cone and Reyes faced each other in the PBA finals was in 2012 with Cone’s B-Meg coming out victorious from the seven-game intense battle with Reyes’ Talk ‘N Text. For Cone, that victory had special meaning as that was the first SMC title in the ?>/Commissioner’s event. They are now into their second term, twelve years apart, as they sit on opposite sides of the league, eager to bring their respective teams to victory and dominate the PBA.
Barangay Ginebra and TNT Tropang Giga are scheduled to do battle in game one of the PBA Season 49 Governor’s Cup finals with this game to be played at the Ynares Center in Antipolo on the 27th of October. Then there are two of the most traditional teams of the league meeting up and the never-ending dramatic rivalry between Cone and Reyes. The result of this game will establish the potential trend of the remaining games of the series in addition to telling the audience how each team plans to perform against the other.
Looking at what PBA fans await in this exhilarating finals series, it should come as no surprise that the face-off between Tim Cone and Chot Reyes will spell up another factor of interest.
