The TNT Tropang Giga kicked off their Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) Season 49 Governor’s Cup semifinals campaign with a hard-fought victory, defeating the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters 90-81 in Game 1 on Wednesday, October 9, at the PhilSports Arena. This triumph puts TNT one step closer to securing a spot in the finals, despite facing the adversity of losing a key player to injury early in the game.
TNT's veteran center Kelly Williams, a critical part of their defensive and offensive schemes, suffered an untimely injury just minutes into the game. The 42-year-old landed awkwardly while attempting a layup and immediately grabbed his left leg in pain.
It was later confirmed that Williams had sustained a left calf muscle injury, although the full extent of the damage was not yet known at the time of the press conference.
TNT head coach Chot Reyes expressed concern over Williams’ injury, especially given the pivotal role he plays in the team’s defense.
“Unfortunately, when Williams missed that wide-open lay-up? He tweaked something on his left muscle. We hope it’s nothing serious, but he couldn’t put any weight on it,” Reyes explained during the post-game interview. “And you know that Kelly is our primary import defender. We need a lot of him. So we are praying it’s something that he can recover from,” he added.

Reyes also mentioned that further tests, including an ultrasound, would be conducted to determine the exact nature of the injury. The team remains hopeful that Williams will recover in time to contribute to the remaining games of the semifinals.
Despite the loss of Williams, TNT did not falter. Players Poy Erram and Henry Galinato stepped up to fill the void left by the seasoned center. Erram, though limited in his scoring contribution with just five points, made his presence felt on defense with four crucial rebounds. His ability to contest shots and disrupt Rain or Shine’s offense played a big role in keeping TNT ahead.
Galinato, while not scoring any points in the game, proved his value on defense. He was tasked with containing Rain or Shine’s import, Aaron Fuller, and succeeded in limiting Fuller to just 18 points on 7-of-19 shooting. This defensive effort was crucial in ensuring that Rain or Shine did not gain any significant momentum during the game.
One of the standout performers for TNT was their import, Rondae Hollis-Jefferson. The former NBA player led the team in scoring with 23 points, adding 12 rebounds and four assists. His all-around game was vital in TNT's offensive and defensive strategies, keeping the team composed even in the face of adversity.
Mikey Williams, TNT’s star guard, also played a key role, contributing 18 points, seven rebounds, and five assists. His ability to control the tempo of the game and knock down crucial shots from beyond the arc kept Rain or Shine’s defense on their heels.
TNT’s bench players also provided crucial minutes, especially with Williams out. Jayson Castro, the veteran guard, added 10 points and hit timely baskets to keep Rain or Shine at bay. Castro’s leadership on the court was evident, as he ensured that the team maintained its focus throughout the game.
On the other side, Rain or Shine struggled to find consistent offense, especially with Fuller being held in check. Gabe Norwood, one of the team’s leaders, finished with nine points but failed to make a significant impact in the second half. Norwood, known for his defense and versatility, could not provide the spark Rain or Shine needed to close the gap.
Rain or Shine’s local players also struggled to find their rhythm, with Rey Nambatac finishing with just eight points and Maverick Ahanmisi adding six points. Without Fuller dominating inside, Rain or Shine was forced to rely on their outside shooting, which proved inconsistent as the game progressed.
Kelly Williams' presence on the court is vital to TNT's success. At 42 years old, he has built an impressive career, highlighted by seven PBA championships, five All-Star appearances, and the prestigious 2008 Most Valuable Player (MVP) award. His experience and leadership are invaluable, especially in high-stakes playoff games like this.
Williams is not only a defensive anchor but also a vocal leader on the court. His ability to guard opposing imports, protect the paint, and facilitate offense from the post makes him a key part of TNT’s game plan. Losing Williams for an extended period would undoubtedly be a blow to their title hopes, but the team remains hopeful for a quick recovery.
Coach Chot Reyes expressed optimism that Williams might be able to return soon, but in the meantime, the team must rally around the “next man up” mentality. Poy Erram and Henry Galinato will continue to shoulder the load in the frontcourt, while the rest of the team steps up in other areas.
With Game 2 set for Friday, October 11, at the Araneta Coliseum, TNT is preparing for another tough battle against Rain or Shine. The Elasto Painters will likely make adjustments to free up Aaron Fuller and try to exploit TNT’s weakened frontcourt with Williams out.
However, TNT’s depth and resilience have been evident throughout the season, and with players like Rondae Hollis-Jefferson and Mikey Williams leading the charge, they remain the favorites to win the series. Coach Chot Reyes will undoubtedly emphasize defense and rebounding in Game 2, as Rain or Shine will look to attack the paint more aggressively.
For Rain or Shine, finding a way to break TNT’s defensive schemes will be critical. Fuller will need to assert himself more inside, while their shooters will have to step up and hit timely shots to keep the game close.
