NBA Trade Report: Sacramento Kings Land All-Star DeMar DeRozan in Three-Team Trade

The Sacramento Kings created a coup of sorts by acquiring free agent and National Basketball Association (NBA) veteran DeMar DeRozan on a three-year, $74 million deal in a three-team trade involving the Chicago Bulls and San Antonio Spurs.

Trade Details

The trade will see Harrison Barnes move to San Antonio, while the Bulls will receive guard Chris Duarte, two second-round picks, and cash from Sacramento, and RaiQuan Gray, who will be waived from San Antonio.

Arturas Karnisovas, executive vice president of the Chicago Bulls, confirmed DeRozan’s departure in a statement on Tuesday, July 9 (Philippine Standard Time).

“We thank DeMar for everything he has done for our team as a leader and mentor. Everyone inside our building appreciated and respected DeMar’s professionalism and commitment to the organization and the city of Chicago, and we wish him the best in Sacramento,” the statement read.

DeRozan's Performance and Role

Recent Performance

The small forward is coming off a three-year, $81.9 million deal with the Bulls and was his usual consistent self on the court last season. He averaged 24.0 points, 4.3 rebounds, and 5.3 assists per basketball game on 48 percent shooting, and also finished second to Golden State Warriors icon Stephen Curry in the NBA’s Clutch Player of the Year voting.

Role in Sacramento

The Kings have made some smart acquisitions in the offseason, with DeRozan set to join All-Star guard De’Aaron Fox, All-Star center Domantas Sabonis, and exciting youngster Keegan Murray as part of the franchise’s core.

The Bulls for their part, have been actively working on making their roster younger, as evidenced by trading Alex Caruso for Josh Giddey. Duarte is another young player with a high ceiling and was an All-Rookie honoree in the 2021/22 season with the Indiana Pacers. However, he struggled with injuries and playing time during his stint with Sacramento.

Selected as the ninth overall by the Toronto Raptors in the 2009 NBA draft, DeRozan has vast experience in the league, having also played for teams including the San Antonio Spurs aside from his time in Chicago.

DeRozan's departure from the Bulls marks the end of a productive stint where he showcased his trademark consistency and scoring ability. During the previous season, he averaged an impressive 24.0 points, 4.3 rebounds, and 5.3 assists per game while shooting an efficient 48 percent from the field. His performance earned him recognition as one of the top clutch players in the league, finishing second only to Stephen Curry in the NBA's Clutch Player of the Year voting—an accolade that speaks volumes about his ability to deliver during critical moments.

As the Kings prepare for the upcoming season with DeRozan in their ranks, fans and analysts alike are eager to see how his addition will influence the team's dynamics and performance on the court. His ability to create scoring opportunities, coupled with his experience in navigating the pressures of high-stakes NBA competition, positions him as a key asset in Sacramento's pursuit of playoff contention.

Conclusion

The Sacramento Kings' acquisition of DeMar DeRozan marks a significant chapter in the team's ongoing evolution and strategic development. With a focus on blending veteran leadership with emerging talent, the Kings are poised to make waves in the competitive landscape of the NBA. As fans and stakeholders await the unfolding of the upcoming season, all eyes will be on how DeRozan's presence transforms the dynamics of his new team—and whether it propels the Kings to new heights of success in the Western Conference.
